Sony unveils a graphics revolution deserving of 4K by 2026 on the PS5.
The PS5 isn't finished yet. Due to Project Sony is developing a new graphics update for Amethyst that will transform the gaming experience beginning in 2026. Additionally, the PlayStation 6 can wait—it's not just for the PlayStation. The PS5 is scheduled to receive a significant graphics upgrade in 2026, which Sony has just announced. This collaborative effort between Sony and AMD, called Project Amethyst, will include the FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) technology, which is already used on PCs. To put it simply, this translates into a noticeable visual enhancement for PlayStation 5 games... and more.
In an interview with Tom's Guide, Mark Cerny, the chief architect of the PS5, confirmed that the algorithm created with AMD will be included into current hardware, such the regular PS5. This technique is not only available from Sony, which is a positive thing. This is not a patented technology. In fact, Cerny suggested that it might be implemented on the next Xbox, saying that it's really about advancing the sector.
The PS5 Pro now includes Project Amethyst, which is AMD's FSR 4 technology, to enhance fluidity and visuals.
Project Amethyst is a daring initiative that has been developed in collaboration between AMD teams and Sony engineers since 2023. Its aim is to bring about a significant improvement in the graphics of the PS5 without waiting for the arrival of a new console generation.
The heart of this initiative is the machine learning-based upscaling solution known as FSR 4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution). It is already available on PC and improves visual quality without sacrificing performance.
FSR 4: Better performance on the PS5 Pro with a sharper image and less blur; perhaps on Xbox soon as well?
This jump will cause:
On compatible games, a clearer image, even without a 4K television.
Intelligent picture processing reduces motion blur.
Consistent performance in resource-intensive games because of improved resource allocation.
Furthermore, the experience won't be exclusive to PlayStation users. As Mark Cerny put it:
“Every AMD client has access to these technologies for free. ”
It is obvious that Microsoft might also include FSR 4 into its future Xbox console, particularly given the company's recent announcement of its own partnership with AMD. It is still unknown if this collaboration will lead to a degree of integration comparable to that of the PS5 Pro.
With significant graphical advancements, Sony is counting on the PS5 Pro to prolong the current generation.
Sony is hoping to prolong the PS5's life with a technology upgrade, as the PlayStation 6 is still a far way off. Gamers don't have to wait for the next generation to experience the newest graphics advancements, as the message is clear.
There is a significant change in strategy here. The PS5 is now enjoying a new lease of life, accessible to a wide audience, whereas in the past, new technologies were exclusive to next-generation consoles.
Furthermore, as Tom's Guide's Alex Wawro noted, this kind of upgrade has the potential to transform the console lifespan, rendering the concept of a generation meaningless.
